Cashmere Quality

Much Should You Really Spend On Cashmere?

One of the softest, warmest, and lightest weight fabric that money could buy. Both quality and grade and weight determine the cashmere price. Our cashmere is produced in an ethical way, with high quality yarn that will wear well and last for a long time. This item will cost you between 70 -300 dollars. Unless you would want to pay extra for designers brand name, which if important for you will be paying more money. All our cashmere only uses premium Grade A and Grade B cashmere yarn to weave. Our 100% scarfs are weaved in basket weave which will look like a loose weave but this is done so to get the desired look for sheer transparent fabric.

Do People Love Cashmere So Much? What Are Its Benefits?

Cashmere is one of the softest, warmest, and lightest-weight fabric that money can buy. Cashmere is luxurious and fashionable and is also a durable and practical investment. Cashmere travels well and doesn’t wrinkle. It offers great insulation; is warm in the winter and cool in the spring. Cashmere is long lasting; it actually becomes softer with age and rarely pills after being worn and washed. It should last a lifetime.

What Should You Look For When Buying Cashmere?

As you shop you can compare it with a fine wool sweater, it should feel much better, your fingers can tell the difference. A quick test is to rub the palm of your hand on the surface of the garment and see if fiber starts rolling into little balls. If it happens, watch out. Another quick test is to stretch the garment body side to side and see if it snaps back into shape. If it does not, it suggests possible low quality fiber or very loose tension when knitted which is another way for retailers to lower costs.

What are the differences among pure cashmere blends and cashmere/silk blends and cashmere/cotton blends?

Several things. Silk blends very well with cashmere and gives garments more sheen and drape. Silk is a “harder” fiber when blended with cashmere on the woolen system so the silk & cashmere blended garments do not feel as soft as 100% cashmere. Silk is less expensive than cashmere so a like garment made from a silk cashmere should be cheaper than the 100% cashmere garment. Cashmere blended with cotton will produce a lower priced, cooler garment with some of the characteristics, luxury and softness of cashmere.

What about the size of the yarn and of the stitches, doesn’t that matter too?

Loosely knit, limp fabric is the hallmark of a cheaply made product. Longer fiber makes stronger yarn that pills less.

What are some of the differences between high quality cashmere and low quality cashmere?

The most important factor in the quality of cashmere is the length and fineness of the fibers. Garments made with long and thin fibers pill less and maintain their shape better than cheaper lower quality cashmere and will get better with each wash. Fineness, length and color (natural white cashmere as opposed to natural colored cashmere) are the most important factors in the quality.

How is Cashmere fiber graded?

Cashmere fineness runs from about 14 microns to 19 microns. The lower the number the thinner the fiber and the softer it feels. Raw cashmere hair is sorted into grades based on the length and thickness of the hair, measured in density units called microns. Grade A cashmere is usually considered 14 to 15.5 microns and 30 to 34 cm long, while Grade B is 16- 19 microns; to put this in perspective, human hair is about 75-100 microns.

Grade A cashmere is soft to the touch without heavy washing of the yarn, so it gives us the most longevity from a wear perspective. It’s not going to get holes as easily because the yarn is stronger and because the fibers are long. Grade B requires heavy washing to produce a soft feel, which can produce adverse affects like more pilling and faster wear and tear. The softer the sweater, the higher the quality- or so we think. In reality with cashmere, the better cashmere is not super soft to touch. It softens over time.

About Himalayan Goat

How long does it take the himalayan goat to grow back hair?

The goat hair is like human hair and quickly grows back. Procuring cashmere is an incredibly labor-intensive process. The traditional method is to hand comb the hair (rather than to shear it off, which is more harder on the goats and adds more short , low- quality hairs to the mix) during the molting season in the spring, and separate the long fibers from the short fibers into different grades by hand. The shaving takes place during warm weather so that the goat can get fuller hair for the winter season. The coarser hair is saved for carpet weaving. There are more and more families raising Himalayan goat for income generating purposes. The goat is saved from being slaughtered and the income is much needed for other purposes for the households.

Are The Goats Ever Seared Like Sheep For Cashmere?

Goats are never seared. The hair collecting process is very gentle never hurting the goats. The hair grow backs on time when the goats need them to keep them warm. Better still encouraging pashmina industry means that these goats are speared from being killed when young for meat eating.
